In our experience, the biggest stumbling block for most students is feeling more confident on the ACT and SAT reading comprehension passages. This can be for a variety of reasons, from the student who just ‘hates’ to read to the student who can’t focus on 'boring' passages.
Regardless of the reason, the bottom line is that to get a strong score on the SAT or ACT reading, a student must go into the test KNOWING they have the reading skills and confidence to get through the passages accurately and expeditiously.
Please note that though ACT reading questions tend to be more straightforward relative to the SAT, many students still struggle to finish the ACT reading passages comfortably (ACT: 900-1000 word passages; 10 questions; 8.75 minutes. SAT reading passages: 700-900 word passages; 10-11 questions; 13 minutes.)
